Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid When Using Square Washers

Even the best square washers can fail if installed incorrectly. One common mistake is using the wrong size washer. If the inner diameter is too big, bolts can move, causing uneven pressure and premature wear. Always match washer size to bolt diameter precisely.
Over-tightening is another problem. Applying too much torque can warp washers or damage painted or soft metal surfaces, compromising protection. Also, mixing incompatible materials like stainless steel washers with plain steel bolts can cause corrosion due to galvanic reactions, especially in salty or humid conditions. Finally, skipping washers in high-vibration zones like suspension or engine mounts can cause fasteners to loosen prematurely, risking safety and costly repairs.
