How Garment Factories Can Reduce Material Wastage

Material wastage does not always begin at the cutting stage. It can start much earlier when manufacturers order reinforcement without considering garment layouts, roll dimensions or individual applications. The right interlining fabric should be selected according to the garment sections being produced and the way those sections will be cut. A factory producing multiple styles may need different grades rather than one material for the entire order. Understanding these requirements before purchasing can prevent excess stock, unsuitable rolls and material that eventually becomes difficult to use.
Roll width is particularly important when planning consumption. A product that appears economical per metre may create more waste if its width does not work efficiently with the cutting layout. Roll length should also be considered alongside the production quantity. Woven and non-woven products can come in different roll formats, so manufacturers should not assume that every option follows the same specifications. Another way to control wastage is to separate requirements by application. Heavy reinforcement should be reserved for areas that actually need it, while lighter material can be used where only moderate support is required. This avoids using expensive, high-GSM material unnecessarily.
Before placing a large order, manufacturers should test the selected fusing cloth and finalise the specification. Once the material has been approved, calculate the expected consumption based on actual patterns rather than relying on rough estimates. Include realistic allowance for cutting and production losses, but avoid excessive over-ordering. Keeping records of consumption from previous production runs can make future planning even more accurate. Over time, factories can build a practical reference for different garment styles, making it easier to estimate quantities before each new order. Better planning does not just reduce waste; it also improves inventory control and keeps production costs more predictable.
