Understanding Woven and Non-Woven Interlining in Garment Production

Garment manufacturers have several choices when selecting internal support materials, but woven and non-woven products serve different purposes. Choosing between them should depend on the garment design, fabric characteristics and level of structure required. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to problems with drape, stiffness and bonding performance.

Woven interlining fabric is made from interlaced yarns and is commonly used where stronger structure and shape retention are required. It can be suitable for suit fronts, blazers, sherwanis and other garments where the internal layer supports a larger section. Non-woven material, by comparison, is made from bonded fibres and can be lighter and more suitable for components such as collars, cuffs and plackets.

The adhesive system is equally important when selecting fusible interlining. The material must be able to bond effectively with the chosen fashion fabric under appropriate heat, pressure and dwell time. A mismatch between the fabric and support layer can result in bubbling, strike-through or an unnatural hand-feel.

Manufacturers should evaluate both the initial appearance and long-term performance of the fused panel. A material that looks acceptable immediately after pressing may not perform well after repeated cleaning or movement. Sample testing can help identify potential issues before production begins.

By selecting woven or non-woven materials according to the actual garment requirement, manufacturers can create clothing that maintains its intended shape while still feeling comfortable and natural to wear.
